Default Michael Jackson's world: He slept in an oxygen tent and his best friend was Bubbles the ch

For someone who quickly became the most famous black man on the planet, it is perhaps fitting that 'Wacko Jacko' died as the most famous white man on the planet.
The oddest and most unpredictable pop star in the world, Jackson lived a life that in turn shocked, perplexed and disturbed his audiences.
The King of Pop was often subject to outlandish rumours, but more often than not there was a substantial grain of truth in the crazy tales which came to characterise his life.

Eccentric: Entertainer Michael Jackson inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber in 1986 - rumours were that the star was planing to purchase the equipment to help him live longer

But as his death raises even more questions and mysteries, will we finally be able to unpick the truth about Wacko Jacko?
Was he as mad as his critics liked to suggest, or simply a much-maligned recluse so badly scarred by child stardom that he never had a chance?
WACKO JACKO: Jackson often sat in his favourite tree at Neverland to write songs. He named it the Giving Tree, for its 'inspirational qualities'

Anybody who chooses as his home a 2,600-acre ranch named Neverland after the magical kingdom featured in Peter Pan could hardly be described as normal. Jackson bought the property in 1987, aged 28.
He was thrilled when his dream home was completed - complete with a fully operational amusement park and a private zoo packed with exotic animals.

In the meantime his softly spoken, girlish voice prompted speculation that he had undergone hormone treatments to preserve the high, flexible vocal range of his youth. Elsewhere, it was claimed that he lived on fruit and nuts to prevent his falsetto voice from breaking.
Stories were told about Jackson sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber to slow the ageing process - it is alleged that Jackson started this rumour himself as a publicity stunt.
Later, he sought to play down some of these stories, saying that he did buy an oxygen chamber, but immediately donated it to a Californian medical centre as a therapeutic aid for burns victims.
WACKO JACKO: He performed at the 1996 Brit Awards in Christlike robes and surrounded by worshippers. Jarvis Cocker rushed the stage in protest

The singer knew only too well what they were going through - he had suffered severe burns to his scalp after an accident on the set of a Pepsi commercial in 1984.
As well as his fondness of children, who frequently shared his bed at Neverland, Jackson claimed a strong affinity towards animals.
In the Eighties he launched Michael's Pets, a range of soft toys based upon the animals he owned. The toys consisted of a frog, dog, rabbit, snake, ostrich, giraffe, llama and Bubbles the chimp. Jackson also appeared in the range, bizarrely, as a bear wearing sunglasses and a fedora.

The 2002 baby-dangling incident, and hiding from the world in April this year

In the late Eighties, Bubbles was Jackson's constant companion. He sat in for the recording sessions of the smash-hit Bad album and during the ensuing world tour he and the singer shared a two bedroom hotel suite.

At Neverland, he slept in a crib in Jackson's bedroom and was allowed to use the star's private toilet.
As Bubbles reached adolescence, however, he became aggressive and was moved to an animal sanctuary amid fears that he might attack Jackson's newborn son, Prince Michael.

Nevertheless, Jackson continued to make his own bizarre gestures of affection towards Bubbles, such as planning a 'celebrity animal party' for Bubbles. Cheeta, the chimp from Tarzan, and movie star dogs Benji and Lassie were on the guest list.
WACKO JACKO: Jackson rarely ate and at times weighed little more than 7st

Throughout this period Jackson underwent vast changes to his appearance, but when it suited him he could still play the race card.
Seven years ago, with his career in decline, he launched an outspoken attack on Sony Music chairman Tommy Mottola, calling him 'devilish' and making claims that he used racist language and held back black artists.
Shortly afterwards, Jackson appeared at a court hearing where he was ordered to remove a bizarre surgical mask, only to reveal that his nose had caved in from botched cosmetic surgery.

WACKO JACKO: He tried to buy the remains of Elephant Man Joseph Merrick. The London Medical College declined to sell, despite an offer reputedly in the millions

Along the way he wasted hundreds of millions on shopping sprees, during which he would buy tasteless artwork despite having no remaining space on which to display it.

He also married Elvis Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, then divorced her two years later. It was only when he started to have children of his own that his misguided lifestyle began to be of serious concern.
All three children (regardless of gender) were named after Jackson - Prince Michael, Paris Michael Katherine and Prince Michael II.
What will happen to those children now remains to be seen. But surely their lives cannot come close to the outlandish existence of their troubled father.
He was so high he spent days in a stupor

By Alison Boshoff

Michael Jackson's abuse of painkillers was an open secret among his family and friends. He was often so high that he was practically in a stupor.

He took many drugs - from vitamin pills to anti-anxiety medication like Valium and Xanax. But mostly he favoured painkillers, also known as opiates.
These prescriptions for painkillers are said to have been obtained for him at great expense and quite possibly illegally by his cadre of assistants.

Jackson also once spent £41,000 on a course of cream to treat his skin condition, vitiligo. Brian Oxman, the Jackson family lawyer, described his use of opiates as 'extensive'.

Should the autopsy prove drug abuse to be the cause of death, Oxman promises he will name those who were complicit in his death.
Demerol seems to have been Jackson's drug of choice - he came to rely on it during his 2005 child abuse trial. Demerol is also known as Pethidine and is given to women in labour.

If taken alongside other sedatives or alcohol, patients can fall into a coma.
Jackson claimed he needed the drugs because of pain from a previously broken vertebrae. Yet Oxman told me Jackson was fairly fit, but was a hypochondriac.
His back and ankle 'bothered him', but the real issue was Jackson's medication, which seriously restricted him physically.
Friend Tarak Ben Ammar also called Jackson a hypochondriac. 'One never really knew if he was sick, because he had become surrounded by charlatan doctors who were billing him thousands of dollars' worth of drugs and vitamins.'
Oxman claims people around Jackson fed his addiction. During business meetings Jackson would seem vague and distant, he was habitually late, and 'listless' when he did turn up for rehearsals - all side-effects of his drug habit. Attention has been focused on Jackson's medical team.
The Los Angeles Police Department refuse to confirm the identity of the doctor they wanted to quiz, but the U.S. celebrity website TMZ.com - which first broke the news of Jackson's death - named him as Texas cardiologist Dr Conrad Robert Murray.
